A product configurator on your website: what it delivers and how it works

What a product configurator is, the problem it solves for you and your customer, and how the embed works on your own site while the rest runs hosted.

A customer who wants to know exactly what their variant costs sends an email. You calculate, reply, they’d like something different after all, and it starts again. A product configurator flips that around: the customer builds it themselves, sees the price instantly, and you receive a complete request. This article explains what it is, what it delivers and how it gets onto your site.

What is a product configurator?

A configurator is an interactive part of your website that lets a visitor build a product themselves. They pick sizes, colours, materials or options, and immediately see the effect — on the display and on the price. Think of an illuminated sign where you type the text, choose the colour and set the size, and watch it take shape as you go.

Instead of a static product page with a “request a quote” button, the visitor gets a working tool. What lands at the end isn’t a question but a decision: a concrete configuration, ready to order or request.

What problem does it solve?

The real problem with custom work is the back and forth. Every enquiry without a clear price costs you time at the calculator and costs the customer patience. Some drop off because they don’t know what it will come to; others ask for things that aren’t possible, and you still have to explain and correct.

A configurator catches that up front:

  • Less back and forth. The customer gets an answer to their own question — “what does my variant cost?” — without waiting for you.
  • Complete requests. What comes in is full and correct: every choice is made within what’s technically possible.
  • More requests. A visible price and something tangible on screen lower the barrier. People who would otherwise drop off now see it through.
  • Fewer errors. Because the configurator only allows valid combinations, no impossible order gets through.

You don’t sell harder; you remove the friction that holds sales back.

How does the embed work technically?

You don’t have to rebuild your website for this. The configurator arrives as an embed on your site: a small piece of code — a snippet — that you paste once onto the page you want. From then on the configurator simply appears within your own house style, as if it had always been there.

The work sits behind that snippet, and that runs on our side:

  • The configurator itself — the logic, the options, the price calculation, the preview — is hosted. Your site loads it in, but doesn’t have to run it.
  • Updates, security and maintenance happen at our end. Your snippet stays the same; what sits behind it improves along the way.
  • A request a customer completes reaches you in structured form — ready to process.

For you it’s one line on your page. For the customer it’s a smooth part of your website. The complexity stays out of sight.

Who does it work for?

A configurator pays off as soon as your product has choices that drive the price: dimensions, materials, quantities, options. Illuminated signage, building components, packaging, bespoke furniture — anywhere “it depends” is the standard answer to a price question, a configurator can give that answer for you.

If your product has just one variant and one price, you don’t need it. If the value sits precisely in the combinations, it takes away work you now do by hand.
